After a series of misfortunate events, crashed posts, failed hookups, and remote sites without internet, [Yes, there still remain such primitive places.] I finally gave up on blogging our trip in progress. A fractured computer and contused camera by the end of the trip didn't help either.
So, the trip is now over...and the blogs begin!
As will be obvious to observant readers, this picture is prior to embarkation rather than after arrival in Belize. [It's the coats.]
Passing through Houston on our way. David's military training is obvious-note how he is keeping everyone in step and on time. After all these years...he's really good!
Belize is the only country in the Americas south of the U.S.A. where English is the national language. It was formerly called British Honduras. It was, obviously, colonized by the British. That is, if you don't count all the other people who lived there before them.
The British influence remains in many buildings, such as this one seen out the front door of our room.
...and even above the hotel. The wingspans on these birds which rode the currents around the waterfront all afternoon were about 4 feet.
We decided that this apparently standard hotel symbol may in fact be doubling as a light house. We partly decided that when we found a dark and lonely lighthouse on the sea wall a block away.
We also decided this when we saw that they really still need a light house: the view in 3 of the 4 cardinal directions was similar to this [but mostly with much longer water beyond...like you couldn't see lights across it]:
We also shared the hotel with other local soaring animals. Well, OK, to be completely honest, this guy dined and slept in his own tree.
Next, an exciting voyage up the NEW RIVER on day 2 of our Mayan adventure.
